FBXL branded big-tech alternatives

Post by SJ Zero »

Hi guys,

I've been working on it for a while, I've set up alternatives for a bunch of big tech services. This is running off of a computer living in my basement, so if the wrong thing happens tomorrow they'll stop working, but I hope you guys find them as interesting as I have been.

A metasearch engine at https://search.fbxl.net/
a peertube-based video site at https://video.fbxl.net/
A friendica-based social networking site at https://social.fbxl.net/

Peertube and friendica are both open source projects that are part of the Fediverse. Basically, even though you're on the one server, you can connect to people all over on different servers. On peertube I found someone hosting some of my favorite youtube channels as well as a lot of interesting open source content, and on friendica I've been able to find a lot of interesting folks, including routine posts by the eff and cory doctorow.

Anyway, enjoy. Do me a favor and don't break anything if you can help it? I'm not Amazon after all. :)

If you want to provide a real search engine, and not just metasearch, you can use Yacy (a P2P based search engine)

Nice job!

Ok, after a bit I've got a few more now:

FBXL Social is a social network on the fediverse. Previously I was using friendica, but now I'm running Pleroma. It's more like twitter than facebook, but it also works much better.

FBXL Video is a streaming video site on the fediverse

FBXL Lotide is a reddit style forum with fediverse support

FBXL Search is a metasearch engine that looks at a dozen different websites to get great search results

FBXL Matrix is a server utilizing the Matrix protocol. It will be federated later this year but is presently not.

fbxl.net hosts an XMPP server, a federated instant messaging server

fbxl.net also hosts an Unreal Tournament 99 server

finally for now, fbxl.net hosts a minecraft server

These websites are ad-free on my end, and as far from big tech as it's possible to be. I created all this because I wanted to get away from big tech, but I hope that others can make use of them as well.
