Which to download?

Postby Cretin Ho » Mar 05, 2021 14:23

I'm a bit confused with a bunch of links here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29054

I'm currently using the fbc shipped with WinFBE Suite. Going to remove WinFBE. So I need to setup my own fbc. My system is an old public Windows XP PC that doesn't have anything installed. No mingw. No C compiler. So which one from those many links above should I get? Thanks.

No one cares?

Try with this item (for an old Win32):
FreeBASIC-1.07.2-win32-mingworg.zip | .7z archive - alternative to the normal FB-win32 package, may work better for older Win32 systems

You can add:
gcc-5.2.0-for-FB-win32-gengcc.zip - 32bit gcc for the FB-win32 package, in case you want to use -gen gcc.

You can copy the folder FreeBASIC-1.07.1-gcc-8.4 from the suite to a new location.
It works as an independent self contained fb distribution.
Whatever ide you use you can point to fb32.exe or fb64.exe.
I have tested this out, it works.
FreeBASIC-1.07.1-gcc-8.4 has maybe has been updated to 1.07.2, I don't know, but whatever I am sure it will be OK.

Pick win32: FreeBASIC-1.07.2-win32.7z from the site, it works with XP. Use a batch file with something like
fbc.exe "%1.bas" passing filename (without extension) as argument; or just drag the *.bas source over fbc.exe

You say this is an old public Win XP system.

Is this now yours, to do with as you wish?
It is probably cpu power and resource starved by today's standards, a lightweight linux might give you a little more speed.

Just a thought.

(First investment: a new disk, like cheap SSD, might save you some pain later.)

Hi. It's a computer of a Cafe Internet shop. Now I'm back to home with my Linux system, the answer is no longer needed since I don't run any versions of Windows at all. BTW, I admit I still not figured it out which version I should download if I'm a Windows user, it's kind of a mess IMHO.

The version 1.07.2 release notes say:

Most likely package you need is...
win32: FreeBASIC-1.07.2-win32.7z
win64: FreeBASIC-1.07.2-win64.7z
...

Are those not working?

Not. I'm just confused. Not even try downloading. It's my weakness. When I'm confused I'm very easy to panic and stuck do nothing.

That answers Cretin Ho's question "if I'm a Windows user" but he isn't.

I still can use it on Wine. Honestly I tried to cross compile from Linux to WIndows but always failed. I have the C cross compiler working, though. So I think I'm better just use the Windows compiler on Wine to build Windows binaries.

p/s: finally I found something that suites my needs: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=28464
