Old thread.
Topic still relavent, though.
My fav 'small' distro was Lubuntu.
Fairly complete. Can be filled up with Ubuntu apps, libs. Or even stripped smaller.
Ran very well on *really* old hardware.
After moving to qt based apps and dropping the old hardware focus - it became a problem. Lots of missing functionality.
Now, with Wayland here - but not - even more bits of functionality are missing for all Linux distros.
For example, with the shifted focus of the compositors and renderers, a lot of the tools that gave access to the desktop windows just don't work, even in xWayland.
Looking for another distro has been hard.
My dream:
Only the core of Linux: NO security features at all. With the option to even not have multiple users. How small and fast would that be?
Security would be my problem: behind firewalls in *MY* net as I allow.
I know: pretty much all services/apps have a userspace that segregates and permits everything. So much old plumbing to pull out.
Just a dream of mine.

Re: Best mini distro, fully working - Founded [ SOLVED ],
Hi david
Yes i tried Lubuntu ,then Runtu ...Ubuntu derivatives (or Debian)
not bad but not as fast as i expected even on XP machines ..but work stable
my point is how anyone here or maybe elsewhere dont make small zippy distro with preinstalled FreeBasic.
I can bet that there are people (i think here too) which know how to do that ,
Linux distro forkers on youtube are oriented to fancy stuff and programs ,very rare we can see something
about programming .
for example author of this one Minix provide FB package but why he dont prebuilt it in distro.
