Best mini distro, fully working - Founded [ SOLVED ],

Post by petan »

Hi,
one small question on Linux FB version.
Which Linux minimalistic live distro /but persistent hdd, usb drive changes savings/ is the best for using with Freebasic standalone ?? No additional packages downloading, of course.
As I saw mini distros ,here is only Puppy, Slitaz, Slax, Tinyme and Mimime of PClinuxOS, up to 250 megs.

Thx,

Pete

No idea, it probably doesn't make a difference to FreeBASIC.

Puppy, Slax, Knoppix ...
But you will spend some time getting the dev libraries and creating symlinks to get FreeBASIC working.

I have heard Slax is excellent, for a small distro.

There is also Feather Linux (which I have used), but it is now dormant. DSL is similar however (Damn Small Linux).

PCLinuxOS is probably one of the easiest to use.

I assume you connection is to slow for a bigger distro?

True, at home only payed limited traffic.
Downs from public library, but unstable conditions.
Now I have downloaded many distros and virtually tested, but I must say no one satisfied me excellently.Except Slackware 12.2 - 6 CD, one and only biggy distro I have, untested yet.
No time because windoze rearmed with portable soft, including programming launguages
Summary - dependency hell fixing on my connection is impossible.

I used Slax and VectorLinux (small and based on Slackware) in the past.

With the current versions i got the whole NVIDIA driver compiled with support for CUDA and OpenCL.

I got no problems with FreeBASIC on this distros.

Now I am better with traffic, so more tests done.
Very speedy job founded with Puppy Slacko 5.3.3, about 115 MB.Unpacked on 4Giga flash card, locked.Done via Yumi or Unetbootin. For my purposes is enough - testing base FB snippets OK, but some libraries not working (OGL), it needs additional installing - impossible on locked drive.Only SFS apps mounted on-the-fly from first hdd (browser+devel pack+custom dark FB color scheme for Geany).

Also I found new Knoppix 7 has excellent boot speed.700 meg distro is not interesting, I'll try DVD version on 8Giga flash card.

For a few days tested puppy Precise 543..
Terrible changes to worse against Slacko 533 - BUT - I am able to find all libraries for running OpenGL. Installed&running : Mesa - GL driver, Glut, Glfw, SDL libs. Great, 3D in action !
Sothat; Slacko for surfing & puppy Precise for 3D coding on linux. Quite speedy job, low requirements.
Multiboot on locked flash, or Virtualbox instance, as you prefer..

On the first try installed debuggers in Puppy Precise 5.6.1 ...

+ Nemiver+xxgdb+DDD+Geany debugger plugin.Kgdb not - it eats 205 meg, so I don't try it.
+ FB 0901 works.
+ net radio OK - Jango&Technobase
+ screen on monitor centered OK finally
+ programming utils as usual in devpack...sfs file, or preinstalled.
- PrintScrn button unhooked for screenshot - tune it yourself.
- Valgrind no success.
This small puppy version looks pretty interesting for longer testing ;)

Howto - 1#.update - customize Puppy Precise Retro 5.7.1
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My multidistro USB install setup:

Pic.#1 - my lightweight distros on locked removable USB flash card 8Giga, USB booting.
Image
Open flash card for writing..
- catch down 'devpack-preciseSFS file'
- catch down essential SFS files - Java, Office, Wine.. manually,
or via installed 'Quickpet-precise05.pet' to get most popular software...
- SFS files mount/remount ONLY via 'load-on the-fly', otherwise troubles
- reinstall Geany 0.19->1.22 if needed Geany-debugger-plugin to install
- tune Freebasic color scheme for Geany, if you hate white background
- add OpenVPN client against intruders, the best someone with GUI (Astrill, ..etc), or install Network manager-gnome + VPN plugin
Installing openvpn is harder for novice, I recommend to find one free provider with full funcionality and visibility of what you are doing (actual state of connection).
List of providers is quite long, but you'll find a few with free or trial plan, for your teaching in Virtual Private Networking.
On physical drive, linux partition, 'home/portables' e.g. location add &
- install Freebasic 0.901+extra libs (SDL, voice syntheser,3D...) and extra debugging tools, if needed
- install another portable linux software - e.g. two panel file commander on physical drive 'home/portables' location
- use crypting of your project files & backup it to 'home/projects' e.g. partition created on physical drive & removable another media for higher feeling of safety
Puppy is overholed and open for intruders via alljobs done as root, so if paranoid, use separate PC machine + virtualized OS for websurfing.
#1.update
Puppy - most versions has longtime bug of unmounting drive.
After a mouse rightclick on (mounted) drive icon this one disappears from desktop.
You are able to reborn it by restarting of X-server; emergently.
Present dirty fix is - that (mounted drive) icon has small red cross drawn. You can safely unmount it by MOUSE LEFTCLICK ON THIS RED CROSS.
It's only everybody's drill routine to remember this way and use it.

Pic.#2 - my final OS layout
Image
Now close linux 'Menu->Shutdown->Poweroff'
You will be asked for first time creating file of actual changes..
! Create it on your flash drive !
Close flash card for writing !
Boot again & check your saved settings if working.

P.S.: Maybe I forgot point out some important package to install ;)

Enjoy !!

If time permit I'll create slideshow for detailed look on this distro & FB.
A bit offtopic job maybe, but for total novices incoming from windoze IMO it'll be a big help.
Done !

I'll not carry a wood into the forest; you can find more general video overviews via googlin' keywords "puppy precise install/setup/customize youtube".
Rather one times to see then million times to hear ;)

Excellent !!! Valgrind 3.9.0 enabled.

- Tested Puppy Wary 5.5 / Valgrind 3.6.1 in repos founded >> installed - no error msg appeared about "libc6-dbg problem ..."
,so then reboot to clean Puppy / Valgrind 3.9.0 compiled from tar.bz file...
Okay, presented !
image
Valgrind folder now eats 257 MB, so enough free space is needed.I had 450 for build.

Okay, guys; my summary is - put on multiboot USB these distros:
Puppy Wary 5.5
Puppy Slacko 5.3.3
Puppy Precise 5.4.3 Retro
Puppy Precise 5.6.1 Retro
Puppy Precise 5.7.1 Retro
