I don't know but I have seen screens telling me that Windows will not start suggesting that I reinstall, which I do not do. My 10 started life as a 7. I had 7 for some years almost entirely without grief. The friend I mentioned above has sometimes got his system back by just restoring the MBR.

Yes, it is an image, C: is wiped before restoration.

That sounds quite recognizable, a bit like a problem my brother had. He lived in Africa where there were regular power outages.

What happened sometimes is that there was an outage during startup or shutdown and then the bios for some stupid reason would consider that a failed boot, and switched the default boot drive to some other drive.

That drive had a bootblock of some old windows install, and that caused the weird boot up message.

But in reality it was just a stupid bios that tried to be smart when it shouldn't. One could just fix the bios settings to set the correct drive again.

After a PC restart, then a "try again" in Windows update menu, the pending update KB4535547 has disappeared.

I recieved an update on 15/Jan and two updates today 16/Jan 2020.
15/Jan KB4528759
16/Jan KB4532938
16/Jan KB4528760

Sometimes I just leave my computer running overnight.
I had fbide running last night (messing about with some code).
This morning fbide was gone, so it was either a power blip shut down, (possible with these high winds), or Microsoft re booting after an update or both.

For the moment, I stayed on the 1809 version (while waiting for the stabilization of a more recent version).
I see that Windows update which recently proposed version 1909 has now reverted to version 1903!

Microsoft Windows 10 hit by ‘severe’ vulnerability that could affect up to one billion users

From what I have read it looks like a patch is in KB4528760 ( OS build 18362.592 for Windows 10, version 1903, Windows Server version 1903 and OS build 18363.592 for Windows 10, version 1909 )

@dodicat: KB4532938 is re .NET for Windows 10, version 1909 so it seems you have version 1909 and you now have build 18362.592 covering the NSA revelation; MS issued the patch the same day the NSA contacted them.

If you haven't got these updates yet force Windows to check via 'Check for updates' in the 'Windows Update' page in Settings.

If nothing else this tells us to keep Windows 10 'bang up to date'.

The 'flaw' was in crypt32.dll - WOW! Mine was 'created/modified' 15 January 2020, 07:14:53.

After last windows 10 update here in germany Defender was completely disabled
and all history reports of previous virus scans are missed/deleted !

With a search in the registry I enabled Defender manually :-(

key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
