Wiindows 10
Just got Version 1809. It took 42 minutes start to finish but I got to the desktop in one piece. The giveaway to a successful install was all my desktop shortcuts had arrows on them - half yearly updates override my removal of them every time. <laugh> From what I have read in the last few weeks this update may have features that interest me - previous updates have done nothing but make my backups larger.
Re: Wiindows 10
42 minutes in all, since the beginning of the download of the new version (then the online installation, the reboot and the offline installation with several automatic reboots), or only since the PC user reboot to finalize the installation?

Re: Wiindows 10
From the beginning of the download to the desktop. My broadband is 76Mbps and Microsoft updates usually come in 'flat out'. That plus a 4 core/8 thread i7 means I don't have to wait that long - although I think 42 minutes is a long time. My C: drive has gone up by 6.1GB but that will come down when I clean-up in a few days time.
The first thing that I do is to make sure that my last system backup (04:00) this morning was successful and I then kill everything in my System Tray. I cannot kill my anti-virus (ESET) but I can pause it so I put it on a four-hour pause.

For my portable PC with HDD, WIFI of 6 Mbit/s, and Avast anti-virus always activated, about 6 hours from the download beginning up to obtain the desktop of new version (1.5 H of download + 2.5 H of online installation + 2 H of offline installation) !
In average, a 8.5 factor compared to yours.
(my other PCs, 32bit and 64bit, use Win7)

Re: Wiindows 10
6 hours! Blimey. My machine is getting a bit long in the tooth now and I am waiting for the Intel i9-9900K to hit the streets. Whether I can resist it remains to be seen. In general, I am a tight-fisted individual but, funnily enough, not when it comes to PCs.

Re: Wiindows 10
I have just uninstalled WinAero Tweaker - I used it to increase the text size in drop-down menus and message boxes. The new Win10 has an entry in Settings>Ease Of Access which does just that and it works a treat. There is a 'Screen snip' added but it is not in the same league as FastStone Capture. The dark theme for Windows Explorer and the Open File Dialog is really cool.

My laptop (ASUS) is quite new, with a core i7-7500U, 6 GB, but only a HDD 1TB (access time penalizing).
I can already see this slow access at each startup when the PC runs at 100% on its hard drive for a little more than 5 minutes.

Re: Wiindows 10
I have a 1TB internal hard drive but my C: drive is a SSD and not that fast compared with the latest SSDs. However, my cold boot time to the desktop is 22 seconds.
I decided to purge the old installation ahead of schedule and deleted this morning's (04:00) backup. I did another backup. I use a mild compression but don't bother with incremental or differential backups preferring a full backup. I run a lean machine and don't horde applications - the full backup to an external SSD took 3 minutes and 23 seconds. A restore takes longer and gives me time to make a cup of tea but I am back at the desktop fairly quickly. I only had to restore once with Win7 but I have had to a few times with Win10.

I'd recommend to either add (if there's a free M.2 or SATA slot) a SSD (250 GB should be enough) or replace the HDD by a SDD (1 TB SSD isn't that expensive anymore). Installing the system and applications on the SSD gives an enormous performance boost.fxm wrote:My laptop (ASUS) is quite new, with a core i7-7500U, 6 GB, but only a HDD 1TB (access time penalizing).

Re: Wiindows 10
Indeed, this appears in the form of a download and an installation to trigger manually, after asking for updates available in Windows Update.Windows 10, version 1903 is available by manually selecting “Check for updates” via Windows Update. (Note We are slowly throttling up this availability while we carefully monitor data and feedback.) The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel.
Does anyone have already installed it?
(For my part, I think to wait if possible a few dozen days before embarking on this big update)
Re: Wiindows 10
@fxm, I have it installed in one of my VM's, but I spend very little time on Windows nowadays
Re: Wiindows 10
How long in all to take the installation?
(with HDD or SSD disk?)

Re: Wiindows 10
unfortunately I did not time it, all I have is HDD and it did not take that long, less than one hour.
Re: Wiindows 10
Are you sure is was the big revision of windows 10 version 1809 => 1903, because this morning just before, there was a normal Windows update for 1809 (KB4497934), the last update before the big (1809 => 1903) I spoke (maybe not everyone is eligible yet).
Re: Wiindows 10
yes, it's 1903, that was about 3 or 4 weeks ago.
